Organize and Categorize Cold Case Information
Organization of cold case files is performed using the CCAT TextExtrator tool and the LexisNexis CaseMap© tool. The investigator utilizes the TextExtractor to skillfully search case documents to find pertinent information. Once the information is found it is hyperlinked and passed the LexisNexis CaseMap tool.
The LexisNexis CaseMap tool makes it easy to organize, evaluate, and explore the facts, the cast of characters, and the issues in a case. It helps to organize what has or has not been done, what should be done, and what must be re-tested, re-analized, or who must be re-interviewed. CaseMap is loaded with common categories or objects and Names relating to key individuals in their case. Categories are such things as Conclusive Evidence, Cause of Death, and Time Line Information as an example. A template is supplied by ICI with the initial categories setup (see figure 2) that can be easily modified to accommodate your investigative needs. Names are related to persons of interest in the case such as a victim, suspects, and witnesses.
Once CaseMap is loaded with case information and hyperlinks, linking back to excerpts in the original document is easy. The Investigator can simply find the appropriate category in CaseMap and click on the link they are interested in, and the original document will be displayed with the hyperlinked text highlighted.
